A friend loaned me a book last month, Parenting A Free Child: An Unschooled Life. I loved this book a lot and don't want to give it back, but I will. It was packed with lots of great insights and quotes. Some of them remind me of Shadow. She was the coolest unschooled dog! My boys are pretty cool too though. Here are some random quotes she used as headers to each new topic. There were about 70 topics in Q and A format. It made for easy reading. I will add a quote from Rue as well:
"A person's freedom of learning is part of his freedom of thought, even more basic than his freedom of speech." John Holt
"A Free Bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky." Maya Angelou
"My sister has two birds. On warm days she puts their cage outside, where they can feel the air and hear the call of birds the trees. No free bird has ever tried to climb into the cage with them. That's the image that comes to mind for me when people ask about my free children going to school." Rue Kream
"Our children are watching us live, and what we ARE shouts louder than anything we can say." Wilfred A Peterson
"Punishment doesn't even teach what not to do, much less the reasons not to do it: what it really teaches is the desire to avoid punishment." Alfie Kohn
"Him that I love, I wish to be free --even from me." Anne Morrow Lindbergh
"I really believe unschooling works best when parents trust a child's personhood, his intelligence, his instincts, his potential to be mature and calm." Sandra Dodd
