Unschooling has opened my eyes to many exciting learning opportunities and experiences. For instance, tonight I was listening to the Act!vated Storyteller's podcast "Apple Dumpling." It is a very cute story from England (I believe) about an elderly woman who needs apples and barters until she gets some and helps a few people along the way. Under the blurb about the story I see this intriguing line: "Read the MSN story about trading a paper clip for a house." So I read the recent story about Kyle MacDonald who kept trading items on Craigslist.com until he bartered up to a house. Kyle has a blog about it. So I searched Google and found his REALLY cool blog. His blog has a square that says "Trade Your Stuff" and it led me to a trading post. So I click that and a few clicks later it leads me to another page where I see a person has a blog called, RV Redemption. I don't know how that is going for her since she hasn't posted in several weeks and just started her blog last month. It was really interesting to find her blog--because if I were going to want to barter for something right now, that is what I'd barter for!
So anyway, as you can imagine the wheels in my head are turning! Lots of people are bartering these days. There's a recent Newsweek article called, "My Kingdom for a What? How barter became big business on the Internet." I even found a blog for bartering books.
Bartering is an ancient concept and very hip again! If anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know. I'm sure Cliff would think I'm crazy if I tried to barter for an RV or bus. But what have we got to lose? I just thought I'd share this with you just in case you have a need. Bartering may be the answer you've been hoping for. Or maybe you already barter! Good for you! I barter all the time with Cliff but I don't think that counts.
I found a site, Swapedo.com. It looks like a new one. Anyone out there ever heard of it? Looks interesting! Well I never know what I'll learn next. I read on another blogger's site that "real learning starts with interest...period!" No one can force us to learn anything. So now I'm off to learn something else...chow for now!
Photo: I borrowed this photo of Kyle MacDonald from the Associated Press. I'm sorry if I am acting illegally!!
