Mystery Snake

This afternoon we spent an hour watching a snake we found in front of our house in the road. He was aggressive and rattled his tail at us many times. When we got close he'd strike at us but he didn't get close enough to bite us. We have never seen this type of snake around here. After a long while of just watching each other we went off to do something else and he moved into the grass just in time for the school bus to go by. I finally convinced Holden to leave him alone. Holden wanted to find some gloves to use to pick him up. Since we didn't know what type of snake it was, and he was an aggressive little thing, I thought we should just let him be. If anyone has any idea what type of snake it could be, please share. Or maybe you know of a decent website to help identify him. Thanks!

Cliff thinks it's a bull snake. I'm not sure though.

I tried to post this before but it didn't work. Trying again. Check here: http://www.herpnet.net/Iowa-Herpetology/reptiles.html

I think it is a Fox Snake -- read their description. Yours looks like what they describe a juvenile to be.

You're so smart, Chris!! I read about the fox snake in the link you posted and everything seems to match up! They move during the day and the light gray scales and dark blotches and dark line on the face--all sound like the fox snake when it is young!! Even the part where it said it is often mistaken as a bull snake which Cliff did. And some think it's a rattle snake because it rattles it's tail. I am going to do some more reading about it on-line. Thanks for your help!!!
