Carlsbad Caverns

We have a travel dilemma. Should we go to Carlsbad Caverns next week on the way to Albuquerque, NM? It is a 13 hour drive to ABQ from where we are in Texas. We could stay in a motel in western Texas and get up and go to the caverns the next day. It is kinda on the way for us to go to the caverns. I really wanted to hit White Sands and Carlsbad, but if I am not sure that is doable. Anyone out there have any suggestions on any of this?

Thanks for any advice or thoughts. It is going to be out of the way for us to go there later. We will be staying about 5 or more hours away at another date and then heading west or north from those locations. It is almost too much thinking for me. LOL. I hate to add more expense to our trip, but I think it may be a fun side trip worth considering.

I think you should do it. I haven't been to the Caverns but Rick has and he says it's a must do. I have been to White Sands and it's cool too but I think the kids might appreciate the Caverns more, if you had to choose between the two.

Thanks for the advice! It is appreciated b/c I am torn about not going to White Sands. We went to a really neat cavern in MT in 2010 and I want to see the difference. I wish White Sands was on the way to ABQ from the caverns, but of the two I have to agree. We can see the White Sands in Colorado too.

The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado are awesome too. A different awesome than White Sands. Rick and I camped at White Sands shortly after we were married. That was a very unique and kind of creepy (for me) experience. Very much out in the elements, no trees or vegetation - just sand mounds and the wide open sky. We had to check in at the park headquarters to make sure that there were no missile tests scheduled for the time we were camping -- kind of scary thought!

We visited the Great Sand Dunes a couple of years ago. Didn't camp, just a couple hours there but the drive in and the dunes themselves was quite spectacular and memorable! The kids will have fun on the dunes for sure!

I think visiting the Caverns and the Great Sand Dunes is a good plan.

Do both if you can! Otherwise, I would probably say Caverns over Sands. Sands are cool if you can camp...otherwise you sort of just drive really far, take a look, maybe do some 'sledding", and then turn around and drive back. Caverns are awesome and will give you a little more to do.
